W4: "My Hero Fights Hunger"
My Hero Fights Hunger
In 2023, there is around 733 million people went to hunger in 2023, it is not just a number, but real lives. That means one out of every eleven people in the world didn't have food to eat, and in Africa, that's even more, almost one in five people face hunger every day (World Health Organization: WHO, 2024). So, in the world that I created, there is a hero that can fight with hunger to save the world. In the town named Sunbrook where jobs are few and dreams grow slowly, a cafe's owner called Annie opened her cafe not for profit, but for people and the food security is a daily reality. The town was in a rural area, a quiet countryside town near the edge of a quiet forest.
A few years ago, she was a struggling mother who just divorced and raising her child on her own. But she refused to give up and she try to change her life. Annie works closely with local vegetable suppliers and local farms, sourcing fresh produce at a fair price while supporting the farmers who have fed the town for generations. Her cafe serves meals that are not only affordable to the neighborhood, but healthy and homey through these partnerships. Her staffs are not just workers; they are single mothers like Annie or individuals who have been pushed aside by the society. At Annie's cafe, they find more than a job, they can find a chance to rebuild.
Annie partners with the local vegetable suppliers and local farmers, creating a stable demand for their produce. Some of her cafe's ingredients come directly from community gardens, which she helps to promote through the cafe's weekend workshops. Occasionally, she even invites farmers to share tips on growing food at home, inspiring customers, especially some struggling families to start small gardens of their own. Annie provides healthy and affordable meals made from fresh and local ingredients. She offers "kindness bowls" for those facing financial hardship to ensure that nutritious food is never out of reach. Annie also rebuilds others' lives. She hires people from marginalized groups and gives them a chance. At Annie's cafe, they receive job training, emotional support and a second chance. She is helping families become more self-reliant in the long term. Annie is quietly helping the town grow stronger together.
Hunger in Annie’s town isn’t caused by war or disaster, that is something quieter and more hidden. The area is rural with limited access to grocery stores and fresh produce. Many families live far below the poverty line, struggling to afford some basic meals. Jobs are hard to find, and for those who do find work, wages are often too low to keep up with the rising of food prices. Even more, single parents or elderly residents are hit the hardest. With few public resources and little outside support, food insecurity becomes a daily challenge—not because there’s no food, but because it’s out of reach for too many.
Running a cafe on a tight budget, she constantly balances between keeping prices low and staying afloat. Sourcing affordable, fresh ingredients while supporting local farmers is a daily puzzle. Staffing is another challenge. Annie hires people from marginalized backgrounds, they need training, emotional support, and time to regain confidence. On top of that, there’s the emotional toll. As a single mother herself, Annie knows what struggle feels like and seeing so much need around her can be overwhelming. But Annie still pushes forward, because of her, every warm meal and every small act of kindness matters. Even if she can’t solve hunger entirely, Annie is trying her best that many people at a time, change is possible.
Aina doesn't see herself as a hero. "I'm just doing what I can do", that's her slogan with her warm smile. Her story reminds us that fighting hunger doesn’t always require big money or global campaigns. Sometimes, it starts with a warm meal, a welcoming smile, and the courage to care. Annie will try to do her best, make the community stay away from hunger.
